Running a brand design studio has been an exhilarating journey, filled with beautiful connections and opportunities. The 18 y/o college design student in me would be over the moon about my progress.
As entrepreneurs, we often find ourselves immersed in the fast-paced, American hustle of meetings, deadlines, and constant decision-making. While the pursuit of success is undoubtedly thrilling, it can also take a toll on our mental and physical well-being. My intent is to explore the importance of balancing mental and physical health while running a business and discussing how doing so can supercharge your entrepreneurial journey.
Demi Lovato said it best...
“The advice I’d give to somebody that’s silently struggling is, you don’t have to live that way. You don’t have to struggle in silence. You can be un-silent. You can live well with a mental health condition, as long as you open up to somebody about it, because it’s really important you share your experience with people so that you can get the help that you need.” — Demi Lovato
To build a successful business, you need to be at the top of your game, and that starts with taking care of yourself.
The Power of a Healthy Mind
Your mental health is the compass guiding your entrepreneurial journey. A healthy mind is creative, resilient, innovative, able to pivot, and capable of handling the inevitable ups and downs of business life.
Here are a habits I've adopted that have majorly helped me over the years:
Practice Mindfulness
I enjoy 15-20 minute morning gratitude walks with my phone on DND and my 62oz water bottle in my hand. It sets my day up for success to be fully present and mindful which overall, helps reduce my anxiety levels. It's also scientifically proven that getting sun in your eyes first thing in the morning helps your specialized retina cells tell your brain to stop making melatonin. Aka - it wakes you tf up!
Seek Support
This one's vital as you can't build an empire alone. Don't be afraid to lean on mentors, friends, or professional counselors when you need guidance or someone to talk to. A problem shared is a problem solved.I mean c'mon, it's 2023. Go talk to a therapist and walk away with your head up proudly knowing that you made the jump to help yourself long term.
Stay Organzied
I'm a BIG time calendar girlie. I use a physical notebook as well as google calendar and these two combined have proven to work wonders. Being that I have ADHD, I've learned that writing tasks down, no matter how minuscule, helps keep me accountable as i can be very forgetful. It's all about finding systems that work best for you!
Set Realistic Goals
Break your business goals into manageable milestones and then CELEBRATE the times your hit them. By no means do you need to go drop stacks at an expensive restaurant, but it will help motivate you to reach your next goal This not only boosts your confidence but also prevents burnout by breaking large goals into realistic expectations.
The Fuel of Physical Wellness
Physical health is the energy source that keeps your business running. Without it, your ability to perform at your peak is compromised. Period, end of story.
Regular Exercise
Incorporate physical activity into your daily routine. Whether it's a jog, a walk, a yoga class, or a gym sesh. Exercise releases endorphins, reducing stress and boosting your overall well-being. I'm an avid power-lifter as my brain needs the competition side of sports from playing soccer for 15+ years. Thus, I get my exercise through pushing heavy weights (yes, I consider myself a muscle mami).
Healthy Eating
I cannot stress this enough; proper nutrition is the foundation of good health. Although I'm an avid food tracker and ensure I get the proper nutrition I need daily, this isn't something that's for everyone. SO, you can start by cutting out fast food and excessive caffeine which leads to energy crashes and decreased focus. I mean seriously, how are you going to run a business if that double quarter pounder is causing your blood sugar to fluctuate and trigger anxiety. I'm not b*llshitting you... look it up.
Adequate Sleep
As a brand designer, creative and ultimately, a business owner; there's this misconception that minimal sleep and constant grinding is healthy. Sleep is your body's recovery time. Make sure you get enough rest to rejuvenate your mind, body, and soul. A well-rested entrepreneur is far more effective and creative than an exhausted one.
Take control and prioritize your mental health, no one else will do it for you.
In the thrilling world of business, don't forget that you are your most valuable asset. By prioritizing mental and physical health, you are investing in your success. Remember, a healthy mind and body not only enhance your performance but also give you the resilience to overcome obstacles and adapt to change. So, make your well-being a top priority on your entrepreneurial journey. When you are at your best, your business will be too. Start today, and watch your business soar to new heights. Your success story begins with you!
